    Shock-Wave Heating Model for Chondrule Formation: Prevention of Isotopic Fractionation

    Chondrules are considered to have much information on dust particles and processes in the solar nebula. It is naturally expected that protoplanetary disks observed in present star forming regions have similar dust particles and processes, so study of chondrule formation may provide us great information on the formation of the planetary systems. Evaporation during chondrule melting may have resulted in depletion of volatile elements in chondrules. However, no evidence for a large degree of heavy-isotope enrichment has been reported in chondrules. In order to meet this observed constraint, the rapid heating rate at temperatures below the silicate solidus is required to suppress the isotopic fractionation. We have developed a new shock-wave heating model taking into account the radiative transfer of the dust thermal continuum emission and the line emission of gas molecules and calculated the thermal history of chondrules. We have found that optically-thin shock waves for the thermal continuum emission from dust particles can meet the rapid heating constraint, because the dust thermal emission does not keep the dust particles high temperature for a long time in the pre-shock region and dust particles are abruptly heated by the gas drag heating in the post-shock region. We have also derived the upper limit of optical depth of the pre-shock region using the radiative diffusion approximation, above which the rapid heating constraint is not satisfied.     Visualization of hydrogen injection in a scramjet engine by simultaneous PLIF imaging and laser holographic imaging

    Flowfield characterization has been accomplished for several fuel injector configurations using simultaneous planar laser induced fluorescence (PLIF) and laser holographic imaging (LHI). The experiments were carried out in the GASL-NASA HYPULSE real gas expansion tube facility, a pulsed facility with steady test times of about 350 microsec. The tests were done at simulated Mach numbers 13.5 and 17. The focus of this paper is on the measurement technologies used and their application in a research facility. The HYPULSE facility, the models used for the experiments, and the setup for the LHI and PLIF measurements are described. Measurement challenges and solutions are discussed. Results are presented for experiments with several fuel injector configurations and several equivalence ratios

    Macroscopic detection of the strong stochasticity threshold in Fermi-Pasta-Ulam chains of oscillators

    The largest Lyapunov exponent of a system composed by a heavy impurity embedded in a chain of anharmonic nearest-neighbor Fermi-Pasta-Ulam oscillators is numerically computed for various values of the impurity mass MM. A crossover between weak and strong chaos is obtained at the same value ϵT\epsilon_{_T} of the energy density ϵ\epsilon (energy per degree of freedom) for all the considered values of the impurity mass MM. The threshold \epsi lon_{_T} coincides with the value of the energy density ϵ\epsilon at which a change of scaling of the relaxation time of the momentum autocorrelation function of the impurity ocurrs and that was obtained in a previous work ~[M. Romero-Bastida and E. Braun, Phys. Rev. E {\bf65}, 036228 (2002)]. The complete Lyapunov spectrum does not depend significantly on the impurity mass MM. These results suggest that the impurity does not contribute significantly to the dynamical instability (chaos) of the chain and can be considered as a probe for the dynamics of the system to which the impurity is coupled. Finally, it is shown that the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy of the chain has a crossover from weak to strong chaos at the same value of the energy density that the crossover value ϵT\epsilon_{_T} of largest Lyapunov exponent.     Electrophoretic mobilities (EPM) of peripheral lymphocytes were studied from normal subjects, chronic hemodialysis patients and kidney transplant recipients. A technique to separate B lymphocytes and null cells from non-T lymphocyte preparation was developed. The experiments were designed to determine which subpopulation of the non-T lymphocytes is primarily affected and shows a decreased EPM in chronic hemodialysis patients and kidney transplant recipients

    Information programs to promote cellulosic biofuels may not achieve their objectives unless consumers can be induced to care about the information presented to them. The social psychology literature highlights two commonly used models to link psychological variables to environmentally related behaviors: the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and the Norm Activation Theory (NAT). Other studies have compared the strength of these models or have adapted these models by adding additional variables, but few have compared across the alternative variable combinations noted in the literature. That is, most studies have added one or two psychological variables to the NAT or TPB models and have found that the additional variable is a significant factor influencing behavior. However, we are unfamiliar with any study that has included the full suite of examined variables within one model. This could be a problem in that the psychological variables are likely to be correlated. In turn, the output of these models may suffer from omitted variable bias; which could lead to erroneous conclusions about the importance of any specific variable. Previous findings that individual variables are significant in influencing behaviors may be incorrect. One objective here then is to start examining whether these \u27significant findings\u27 are robust, and if not, whether we can be more parsimonious in future modeling efforts. Economists often assume preferences are adequately proxied by the person\u27s socioeconomic characteristics or by the person\u27s participation in some environmental behavior. Recently, economists have begun to recognize that these characteristics are poor proxies especially since the proxies commonly used are binary (0/1) variables that provide relatively little detail, are usually not policy or program relevant and lack a theoretical justification. Thus, another objective is to compare the performance of models that incorporate these proxy variables with models incorporating psychological variables. Our results suggest: that a combined TPB and NAT model may be more effective than either model alone; that many variables seen as important in the literature may be less important than previously thought (allowing for more parsimonious models - resulting in less costly data collection); and that common proxy variables like membership in an environmental group may not work that well
